Following up on the success of previous continuing education events, TIAFT’s Continuing Education Committee is delighted to serve you on May 10th (2-5 pm CEST; 8-11 am EST) a Webinar dedicated to alcohol.
In this 3-hour webinar, four experts will explain different aspects of the forensic analysis of alcohol, including back-calculations, and alcoholic blackouts. The webinar will end with five country perspectives on alcohol analysis from five different continents.

Studies Forming the Basis of Blood Alcohol Calculations in Forensic Science and Legal Medicine.After attending this presentation, one will:

c) Learn the principles and practice of blood-alcohol calculations.
d) Learn about some typical court cases when back extrapolation was required.
Prof. Alan Wayne JonesLinköping University, Department of Clinical Chemistry and Pharmacology (Sweden)
Alan Wayne Jones, BSc, PhD, DSc, was born in Wales, UK but has spent most of his career working in Sweden. He is now retired from his appointment as senior scientist at the Division of Forensic Genetics and Forensic Chemistry, National Board of Forensic Medicine. Dr. Jones currently serves as guest professor at the University of Linköping, Department of Clinical Chemistry and Pharmacology.
During the past 40 years, Dr Jones’ research has focused on forensic aspects of ethanol and other drugs of abuse. He is especially interested in drug-impaired driving and other drug-related crimes as well as postmortem toxicology. Results of his research is well documented in about 450 original articles, reviews, and book chapters.
Dr. Jones has lectured on the subject of pharmacology and toxicology of ethanol and other drugs at home and abroad. Furthermore, he has testified as an expert witness in litigation concerning alcohol and drug-related crimes in USA (6 states), UK, Denmark, Norway, Ireland, New Zealand and hundreds of times in Sweden.
Dr. Jones’ contributions to forensic toxicology were recognized in 2011 when he received TIAFT’s Alan Curry Award.

Alcohol CalculationsAfter attending this presentation, one will:
a) Know about the guidelines that exist for alcohol calculations and the challenges that go into creating those guidelines.
b) Describe the scientific basis for forensic alcohol calculations.
c) Understand the common errors in back calculation.
Dr Peter D. MaskellSenior Forensic Toxicologist/Deputy Quality Manager, Forensic Medicine and Science, University of Glasgow (Scotland)
Peter Maskell is a Senior Forensic Toxicologist/Deputy Quality Manager at Forensic Medicine and Science (University of Glasgow). He has a BSc and PhD in Pharmacology and is also a Chartered Chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is an active member of SOFT, TIAFT, UKIAFT, CSFOS and LTG (where he was chair from 2020-2022). He is an active researcher in the field of Forensic Toxicology with over 40 scientific publications. He has a particular interest in interpretation and Forensic Alcohol Calculations. He co-wrote the latest version of the UKIAFT Guidelines for Alcohol Calculations (2021) that are UK wide guidelines for forensic alcohol calculations.

Alcohol Calculations
Jennifer F. LimogesAssociate Director of Forensic Science/Toxicology, New York State Police Forensic Investigation Center (USA)
Jennifer Limoges received her B.S. in Chemistry from Clarkson University and her M.S. in Forensic Science from the University of New Haven. She began working for the New York State Police as a Forensic Scientist in 1994. Currently, she is the Associate Director of Forensic Science for the Toxicology and Breath Testing departments of the NYSP Forensic Laboratory System. Ms. Limoges is an active member of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists (SOFT) and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS). She was a member of the SOFT Board of Directors from 2011-2017, serving as President in 2016. She is a current member of the SOFT/AAFS Drugs & Driving Committee and SOFT Ethics Committee. She is a member and Past President of the Northeastern Association of Forensic Scientists (NEAFS), a member of the International Association for Chemical Testing (IACT), and is certified by the American Board of Criminalistics (ABC-GKE). Ms. Limoges is part of the National Safety Council’s Alcohol, Drugs, and Impairment Division, and has been on their Executive Committee since 2008. She served as the Guest Editor for the 2009 SOFT Special Issue of the Journal of Analytical Toxicology (JAT). Ms. Limoges is also very active in standards development within the forensic science community. She worked to establish the Academy Standards Board (ASB), the AAFS’s accredited standards development organization, and currently serves on the ASB’s Board. She is a member of the ASB Toxicology Consensus Body, an affiliate of the NIST Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC) Toxicology Subcommittee, and a past member of the Scientific Working Group for Forensic Toxicology (SWGTOX).

Dr Graham R. Jones, F-ABFTConsultant Forensic Toxicologist (Canada)
Dr. Graham Jones is the former Chief Toxicologist for the Alberta Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He qualified as a Pharmacist in the U.K., later earning his PhD degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Chelsea College, University of London. Dr. Jones then moved to Canada for a Fellowship at the University of Alberta, later joining the University of Alberta Hospital as a Clinical Toxicologist. In 1981 he joined the Alberta OCME as Chief Toxicologist.
